One Law For All NSW Stands In Solidarity With the American LGBTQ+ Community
As an Australian organisation, it has been our policy so far to limit our public statements to Australian events. However, in the wake of the events that occurred in Minneapolis in the last few days, we think it necessary to state our solidarity with the American LGBTQ+ community.
On the 7th of January 2026, 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed in her car by an ICE officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in front of her wife and on the way home from dropping her child at school. Video footage shows that her last words, spoken to her killer Jonathan Ross, were “it’s ok dude, I’m not mad at you.” Government officials, including President Trump, labelled her a domestic terrorist and stated that Ross acted in self defence, despite overwhelming evidence contradicting their version of events. Her friends and family described her love for music and singing, writing, and her family.
However, coverage of this tragic and heartbreaking event by certain prominent members of the US media was nothing short of disgusting and vile. Beyond the already horrific strategy of blaming Renee for her own murder, commentary by these figures defending the shooting consistently described her with the same word- “lesbian.” By identifying Renee almost solely by her sexuality, these media figures seek to imply that it made her a valid target. This messaging is the reason that Google shows a spike in searches by LGBTQ+ people on how to seek asylum in Canada.
One Law For All NSW stands firmly in solidarity with the American LGBTQ+ community, and oppose the consistent attempts by many people to link LGBTQ+ identity with radicalism or terrorism. Our hearts go out to Renee those who know her at this heartbreaking time.
